Repairs continue on Mission Bay Drive sinkhole

Workers have repaired a broken water main that created a huge sinkhole in Pacific Beach, but Mission Bay Drive remains closed for now, a city official said Tuesday.

The 30-inch water main ruptured near the intersection of Mission Bay Drive and Damon Avenue just before 1 p.m. Monday.

City spokesman Arian Collins said the water main has been fixed but San Diego Gas & Electric still need to do some work on a gas line near the water line. Once that work is finished, he said, public utilities workers will recharge the water line.

“If everything looks OK, the hole will be back filled and then street repair will begin,” Collins said. He didn’t have an estimate on when the work might be completed.

The road problems prompted officers to shut down the Mission Bay Drive off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5 for more than seven hours Monday. The ramp was reopened around 8:30 p.m.
