Police: Man tried to kidnap teen walking to school

A 15-year-old girl walking to Orange Glen High School Thursday morning was grabbed by a man but broke away and called for help, Escondido police said.

The teen fought the man off as she was walking on Linwood Street near Kingston Drive around 7:35 a.m. and ran to people nearby for help, said Escondido police Lt. Chris Lick.

While one person called 911, the other used his car to follow the assailant, who was on foot, Lick said.

The driver took a photo of the man, which was provided to police officials.

Lick said no arrest has been made but officers planned to release the suspect’s name at an afternoon news conference.

The student was not injured.

The Escondido Union High School District sent a letter to parents informing them about the incident and reminding students that it is safer to walk in groups.

“The safety of all students remains our top priority. We want to remind all students to please walk in groups and to be aware of your surroundings at all times,” the letter said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Escondido Detective Terese Ruiz at (760) 839.4790.
