High school football roundup: Around the Bay



SAN JOSE — Juan Turner threw three touchdown passes and Charlie Bostic rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns as Valley Christian cruised at home over Pleasant Valley-Chico 55-3 on Friday night.

Alton Julian caught two touchdown passes from Turner in the first quarter, on throws of 28 and 22 yards, and Valley Christian did not look back against an opponent that won a state championship last season.

The Bay Area News Group’s third-ranked team led 14-0 after one quarter and 28-3 at halftime.

Valley Christian added 13 more points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth for its second consecutive blowout victory after a season-opening 22-20 loss at Manteca.

The Warriors have next week off before opening West Catholic Athletic League play at home Sept. 22 against second-ranked St. Francis, which lost Friday at No. 1 De La Salle 31-7.

No. 19 Monte Vista 28, Dublin 26: Jack Stewardson threw two touchdown passes to John Giagiari as host Monte Vista edged Dublin in an East Bay Athletic League opener. Zane Cribb added scoring runs of 3 and 55 yards for Monte Vista.

Dublin’s last threat ended when Monte Vista held the Gaels on downs. Dublin’s record slipped to 1-1 overall.

South Bay/Peninsula

Bellarmine College Prep’s magic ran out as the seventh-ranked Bells were unable to rally for a third consecutive week, falling to Gonzaga Prep-Spokane 38-19 at San Jose City College. Nick Teresi and Tyson Garcia scored on first-half touchdown runs to bring Bellarmine (2-1) within 14-13, but Gonzaga (1-1) added 10 more points before halftime and didn’t let up in the third quarter. … In the Battle of the Den, Leland scored two first-half touchdowns and held off Pioneer 21-7 to run its record to 3-0. Pioneer fell to 1-2. … Westmont finished nonleague play undefeated at 3-0 as the Warriors rolled over Del Mar 43-14. Cam Rottler threw four TD passes and ran for a fifth. Troy Rottler had four touchdowns. Del Mar is 0-3. … No. 14 Archbishop Mitty had little problem sending Palo Alto to its third consecutive defeat, rolling to a 42-6 victory at Foothill College. Mitty will take a 2-1 record into its WCAL opener Sept. 22 against Bellarmine at SJCC.

East Bay

Jacob Levers scored on a 44-yard run up the middle in the first quarter, and ninth-ranked California did not surrender the advantage en route to a 24-7 victory at Livermore to open East Bay Athletic League play. Caden Jarvis added two touchdowns as California improved to 2-0.
