There’s not much history between the Yankees and Astros but enough players have spent time with both teams, so here is the Daily News’ all-time Yankees-Astros team as we await ALCS Game 1:
Bob Watson: Hit .297 with 139 homers as a two-time All-Star in 14 Astro seasons 1966-79. Hit .371 in 17 postseason games with Yankees in 1980 & ’81 then returned as GM of ’96 title team.
Backup: Joe Pepitone
Jose Vizcaino: Made his one Yankee season count with game-winning RBI single in 12th in 2000 World Series Game 4. Was mainstay of Astros playoff teams 2001-05.
Backup: Dale Berra
Larry Milbourne: Slick-fielding infielder for Astros from 1974-76, but had his best years in Seattle. Highlight of two Yankee stints was driving in 3 runs in ’81 World Series.
Backup: Andy Stankiewicz
Morgan Ensberg: Hit 36 homers and was an All-Star in Houston’s 2005 World Series year then closed out career with 80 games for ’08 Yanks.
Backup: Aaron Boone
Carlos Beltran: Hit an incredible 8 homers in ’04 playoffs, had solid two-plus seasons for Yanks 2013-16 before returning to Houston.
Backup: Lance Berkman
Jim Wynn: Toy Cannon belted 223 homers in 11 Astro seasons 1963-73 and got number retired. Injuries slowed career by the time he got to Yanks for 30 games in ’77.
Backup: Bobby Abreu
Jose Cruz: His 13 Astro seasons (1975-87) made him a legend in Houston and his native Puerto Rico with 1,937 hits and two All-Star Games. Closed out career with 38 games in Bronx in 1988.
Backup: Bob Cerv
Brian McCann: Hit 69 homers in 3 Yankee seasons before being dealt to Astros for 2017.
Backup: Pudge Rodriguez.
Cliff Johnson: Slugging catcher led NL in passed balls in 1976 before being dealt to Yanks to become DH, winning 2 rings in Bronx. Dealt to Cleveland after locker room brawl with Goose Gossage in ’79.
Backup: Mike Easler
Roger Clemens: Won Cy Youngs for both teams, went to World Series for both teams and came out of retirement to play for both teams.
Backup: Doug Drabek
Andy Pettitte: Won rings in both stints with Yankees, and helped Astros get to Fall Classic after awkward departure from Bronx in 2003.
Backup: Rick Rhoden
Joe Niekro: Won 144 games for Astros from 1975-85 then pitched parts of three seasons with Yanks at age 40 to 42.
Backup: Jim Bouton
Don Larsen: Hurled perfect game in 1956 World Series as highlight of Yank career from 1955-59 before going to KC as part of Roger Maris trade. Pitched for Houston in 1964-65.
Backup: Shawn Chacon
Randy Johnson: Went 10-1 after deadline trade from Seattle to Houston in 1998 to help win Central Division. Had disappointing two Yankee seasons from 2005-06.
Backup: Wade Blasingame
Mark Melancon: Pitched parts of two seasons with Yanks before being dealt to Astros for Lance Berkman in 2010. Saved 20 games in 2011, only full season in Houston.
Backup: Kyle Farnsworth
Yogi Berra: Bill Virdon managed both teams but Yogi, a coach with Astros from 1986-89, gets the nod.
