Driver resting at gas station carjacked

A Northern California man who planned to drive to Mexico was carjacked at gunpoint while he was resting at a gas station in Otay Mesa West Tuesday night, San Diego police said.

He was in his black 2000 GMC Yukon at the Shell gas station on Palm Avenue, just west of Interstate 805, when the gunman walked up and instructed him to get out of the SUV, police Officer John Buttle said.

The victim ran into the Shell’s convenience store, and the thief drove away. The carjacking was reported about 10:30 p.m.

Buttle said the victim intended to rest, then drive south across the U.S-Mexico border, located less than four miles away.

The suspect was described as black or Latino, in his late 40s or early 50s, wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans.
